About the Role
Reporting to the Chief Underwriting Officer, the Senior Underwriter will evaluate complex facultative life and health risks, applying sound underwriting judgment across medical, non-medical, and financial considerations.
This role requires strong technical expertise, the ability to manage turnaround times in line with service standards, and a client-focused mindset. The successful candidate will also have the opportunity to take on broader strategic responsibilities over time and play a key role in building the company's presence in Canada.
Key Responsibilities
- Assess and underwrite complex facultative cases within established authority limits
- Provide technical guidance and act as a trusted advisor to clients on underwriting matters
- Build and maintain strong client relationships through ongoing communication and in-person engagement
- Maintain and update underwriting requirements in line with client needs and market standards
- Collaborate cross-functionally with actuarial, administrative, and business development teams
- Participate in client audits to ensure adherence to underwriting guidelines and risk profiles
- Contribute to initiatives aimed at improving operational efficiency and risk management
- Represent the organization at industry events, conferences, and client meetings
- Stay current on market trends and evolving underwriting practices, sharing insights with leadership
- Prepare and present findings from client engagements to senior stakeholders
- Support internal collaboration and knowledge sharing across teams
- Assist with contestable claims review when required
Qualifications & Experience
- University degree in business, finance, economics, or a related field
- 8+ years of life underwriting experience, ideally including critical illness and disability
- Professional designations (e.g., FLMI, AALU, FALU) are an asset or in progress
- Strong track record in underwriting and client relationship management
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to convey complex information clearly
- Highly organized, self-directed, and able to manage competing priorities effectively
- Demonstrated integrity, professionalism, and ability to build trust with clients and colleagues
- Comfortable working in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment with evolving responsibilities
