Director of Software Development – CAST Group of Companies (Toronto, Canada). Compensation: Expected base salary range between $155,000–$175,000 CAD, depending on experience and qualifications. Overview The Director of Software Development at CAST Group is a senior technology leader responsible for driving engineering strategy, execution, and organizational development for CAST’s core product lines — including WYSIWYG, the global standard for lighting design and pre‑visualization, and BlackTrax, a real‑time tracking and automation system used in world‑class live events and installations. This role combines strategic leadership, architectural oversight, and hands‑on operational management to ensure CAST delivers scalable, innovative, and reliable products that power the creative industries. Responsibilities - Engineering Leadership & Strategy – Define and execute the engineering strategy aligned with CAST’s business objectives and innovation roadmap; translate product strategy into clear technical goals; oversee multiple teams; build strong engineering culture. - Technical Architecture & Innovation – Provide architectural direction for WYSIWYG, BlackTrax, and new 3D visualization products; guide modernization, cloud adoption, real‑time rendering optimization; champion AI/ML, 3D visualization, automation integration; ensure scalability, maintainability, cybersecurity. - Operational Excellence – Implement efficient development processes, CI/CD pipelines, and IT practices; establish KPIs and metrics; partner with QA and product teams; drive risk management and technical debt reduction. - Talent Development & Team Building – Mentor senior engineers and managers; foster collaborative environment; recruit talent; support career development; promote diversity, inclusion, engagement. - Cross‑Functional Collaboration – Work with product, UX, and customer success teams; communicate decisions, risks, dependencies; contribute to company‑wide strategic planning and investment decisions. Key Deliverables - Comprehensive Product Architecture Blueprint – End‑to‑end design for WYSIWYG and new 3D products covering components, integrations, data flows, scalability. - Technology Modernization Roadmap – Phased plan for evolving legacy and current platforms toward modern frameworks and real‑time rendering technologies. - 3D Rendering and Visualization Framework – Optimize internal architecture, improve GPU utilization, and integrate with lighting and tracking systems. - Cross‑Product Integration Strategy – Design and oversee shared services, APIs, data exchange mechanisms for interoperability. - Performance and Scalability Standards – Establish architectural and coding standards ensuring stability, low‑latency, maintainability. - AI/ML Enablement Plan – Identify and prototype AI‑driven features aligned with product strategy. - Developer Enablement and Mentorship – Build technical capacity, lead design reviews, promote best practices. - Documentation and Governance Framework – Deliver ADRs and governance templates for consistency. - Evaluation of Emerging Technologies – Research and recommend rendering engines, graphics APIs, cloud infrastructure. - Cross‑Functional Alignment – Ensure technical decisions support business goals, creative flexibility, customer innovation. Qualifications - Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in computer science, engineering, or related field. - 8+ years of experience in software development and architecture, preferably in desktop applications, 3D visualization, or real‑time systems. - Proven track record of architecting and delivering complex software products or platforms in a energetic, cross‑functional environment. - Deep expertise in software architecture, frameworks, and design patterns with emphasis on scalability, maintainability, performance. - Strong background in 3D graphics pipelines, rendering engines, or real‑time visualization; experience with OpenGL, DirectX, Vulkan, Unreal, or Unity is an asset. - Solid understanding of C++ and/or C#, with experience optimizing high‑performance desktop applications. - Exposure to AI/ML concepts such as model integration, data pipelines, or intelligent feature development. - Familiarity with DevOps practices, CI/CD pipelines, infrastructure as code. - Experience working within Agile methodologies using JIRA and Confluence. - Demonstrated leadership and mentoring ability; hands‑on, collaborative team guidance. - Highly organized, disciplined, proactive; establish structured workflows, set priorities, make decisions in fast‑paced environments. - Initiative and curiosity; challenge status quo, identify opportunities, contribute to innovation.
