Job Summary The HLI Research Operations Manger collaborates with the HLI Director, HLI Associate Director, and the HLI Executive Team to support the management, coordination and planning of all research activities and operations within HLI. The primary focus of this position is to ensure operational excellence in a multi-disciplinary research environment that includes wet and dry lab research for over 40 Principal Investigators. This is achieved through making professional decisions regarding all research activities within HLI. Key responsibilities include project coordination, communication, and operational oversight for the nine core facilities within HLI. This position supports the core facilities success through effective engagement with each core research manager and is responsible for the quality of work within each core facility. This position also manages research financial tasks and funding applications under the direction of the HLI Director. Organizational Status The UBC Centre for Heart Lung Innovation at St. Paul’s Hospital brings together basic and clinician scientists in an exciting multidisciplinary environment to address heart, lung, and critical care disease. The HLI is the largest translational research centre within Providence Health Care’s St. Paul’s Hospital, comprised of over 40 Principal Investigators (PIs) and over 250 Scientists and staff. Education is provided to over 130 undergraduate, graduate, and post‑graduate students. The HLI Research Operations Manger will report directly to the Centre’s Director and Associate Directors. The incumbent will work closely with UBC staff and faculty members, program managers, coordinators, ethics and finance officials, and clinical ancillary staff. Work Performed - Supports the HLI Director and Associate Director in all aspects of planning, reporting and communication with regards to the improvement of research services and operations for HLI including all stakeholders: UBC, Providence Research, Providence Health Care, funding agencies, potential collaborators, industry, and policy makers. - Provides expertise on clinical research operations and good clinical practice, including for Research Ethics Board (REB) submissions, amendments, and other activities. - Leads the HLI Operations Team with development and maintenance of work plans and schedules across assigned portfolio initiatives. - Facilitates collaborative research agreements with partners within UBC and Providence Research. - Oversees research operations including oversight of the Communications Committee, Training and Environment Committee and the Safety Committee. - Accountable for financial performance of core facilities by monitoring expenses, ensuring compliance with institutional guidelines and preparing financial reports of the core facilities for the Finance Team. Supports initiatives to improve customer services, revenue generation and cost recovery for HLI Services. - Primary workday delegate for the HLI Director and responsible for approval process of Workday transactions of core facility staff members. - Manages current space planning requirements for space renovations and office moves within HLI in coordination with HLI Faculty/Staff, Providence Research, Lower Mainland Facility Management, SPH Physical Plant, and SPH building security. - Represents HLI on the PHC Space Planning Committee to ensure HLI operational needs are accounted for in larger planning projects involving external organizations such as the New St. Paul’s Hospital and CSRC Building. - Determines laboratory equipment needs and specifications for the core facilities. Budgets and procurement for grant applications for ordering equipment. - Contributes to a respectful, inclusive environment. - Performs other related duties as required. Consequence of Error/Judgement The incumbent must be able to work independently and exercise extensive judgment and decision making in assisting with the development of policies and procedures and in the overall coordination and management of the service and operational objectives of the Centre. Error in judgment could have the following adverse consequences: - Inability to successfully develop and implement research initiatives could diminish the centre’s ability to attract the support of the scientific community. - Inability to successfully meet funding agency deliverables, may result in reduced future funding. - Poor public/private sector relationships could result in a negative image of the HLI and may impact on research funding made available through partnerships. Supervision Received The HLI Research Operations Manger will report directly to the Centre’s Director and Associate Directors. Supervision Given - Ensures that operations and services are well run and that projects are implemented. - Provides oversight to Core Managers in relation to operations and management. - Coordinates the training of Core Managers on HLI relevant topics. Minimum Qualifications - Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline. Minimum of three years of related experience, or the equivalent combination of education and experience. - Willingness to respect diverse perspectives, including perspectives in conflict with one’s own. - Demonstrates a commitment to enhancing one’s own awareness, knowledge, and skills related to equity, diversity, and inclusion. Preferred Qualifications - Experience and knowledge of operational management processes and protocols, including using Workday. - Knowledge of University structure and operations including granting agency policies. - Proven administrative experience in a large, multi-functioning organization. - Experience developing, implementing and evaluating research policies and procedures. - Experience and knowledge of MS Office and willingness to learn additional software as needed. - Strong interpersonal skills, along with the ability to work in a team environment and independently. - Ability to work independently, but also to receive and seek guidance effectively. - Ability to contribute to a respectful, cooperative and supportive work environment. - Robust written and oral communication skills including professional and academic writing skills and community‑facing communications development and knowledge translation. - Resourceful, highly organized and self‑directed. - Highly effective in analytical and problem‑solving skills. #J-18808-Ljbffr Required Skill Profession Other General Apply on Kit Job: kitjob.ca/job/2ol3rq
