Job Summary This position is responsible for the start‑up and initiation of clinical trials conducted at the Children's and Women’s Health Centre of BC’s Division of Neurology. The Neurology Research program supports well over 100 active clinical studies in British Columbia for children and young adults with neurological disorders, covering treatments, devices, supportive care, and long‑term outcomes. The Research Manager provides strategic vision, oversees staff performing ethics and regulatory activities, and works with the Research Director to ensure protocols are executed within budget, personnel resources and timelines. Responsibilities - Reviews all potential industry‑sponsored or funded studies for operational feasibility and provides critical feedback to principal investigators, ensuring proper procedures, agreements and facilities are in place. - Manages the overall start‑up and support of studies, including prioritization and assignment of work for all protocols. - Hires, oversees, and evaluates study staff and students in collaboration with the Research Director. - Coordinates the submission and maintenance of REB and departmental documentation for a diverse number of protocols. - Prepares and amends ethics applications and other regulatory documents required by Health Canada and the FDA. - Ensures that trials are maintained in accordance with legal and ethical requirements and that quality improvement and assurance procedures are followed. - Provides strategic leadership in the coordination and administration of start‑up activities to meet program objectives. - Leads study‑specific meetings, staff training activities, and regulatory document management. - Facilitates operational linkages among co‑investigators, clinicians and other health‑care professionals within the hospital and medical community. - Maintains up‑to‑date start‑up training aligned with GCP (Good Clinical Practice). - Develops protocols for human clinical studies with local and external investigators. - Co‑ordinates pre‑study evaluations, site initiation visits, and correspondence with sponsor representatives. - Provides feedback on regulations, budgets, and proposed protocol issues at study review meetings. - Interacts with the University/Industry Liaison Office, Technology Development Office and BCCH Research Institute Finance Manager for contract‑related start‑up and ongoing issues. - Negotiates and manages contracts, budgets, funding agency communication, equipment and supply procurement. - Co‑ordinates monitoring, auditing and responses to regulatory bodies for assigned protocols. - Manages archiving of closed clinical research projects, ensuring compliance with regulatory standards. - Attends conferences and meetings, and performs other related duties as required. - Maintains accurate, accessible and confidential study records and reports. Minimum Qualifications - Post‑graduate degree or equivalent qualified designation with a minimum of four years of related experience (or undergraduate degree with six years of experience). - Commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion and continuous learning. Mandatory Requirements - Independent work in a changing team workplace, demonstrating effective conflict resolution and motivation skills. - Extensive experience with the UBC RISe application process or a similar online system. - Comprehensive knowledge of medical terminology, ethical principles and Canadian regulatory principles. Assets - Knowledge and experience with pediatric neurology and industry trials. - Strong attention to detail and ability to work accurately and quickly. - High computer literacy, including familiarity with Microsoft Word and Excel. - Learning agility for new software programs. - Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills. - Ability to prioritize and meet deadlines under pressure. - Ability to maintain relationships with clinical and technical staff and exercise initiative. - Effective oral and written communication skills.
