Tunnel Engineer in Training (Construction Support) Support an iconic construction project in Vancouver, working alongside our geotechnical and structural engineers on local, national and global projects.
Responsibilities
Collaborate with Engineering, Contracting Authority and Contractor teams to support overall project delivery of multiple critical project elements, including reviewing submittals and RFI, managing engineer inspections, monitoring excavation performance, witnessing and signing off at construction hold points, and communicating key issues.
Provide field engineering support for mechanically excavated tunnels and shafts in sedimentary rock sequences, including systematic geological mapping of shaft and tunnel faces, assessing probe holes and pre‑excavation grouting requirements, design review and field verification of rock support systems, and evaluating excavation performance against expected behavior.
Document ground conditions, performance and engineering decisions in concise technical reports.
Assist with the coordination of work among other engineers and design staff as part of a multidisciplinary team.
Supervise junior staff, providing technical and professional guidance to aid their development.
Prepare daily shift reports capturing HSE, progress, labour, equipment, materials and quality of work.
Provide full‑time on‑site construction engineering support on a shift rotation (including a 10‑hour night shift, swing and day shifts on a 5‑day/week basis, with occasional longer shifts and weekend work).
Qualifications
Strong academic background: Bachelor’s degree in Civil, Geotechnical or Geological Engineering (Master’s degree considered an asset).
Minimum 3–5 years of relevant industry/project experience, preferably in underground construction—including shaft and tunnel excavations and geological mapping; full‑time site experience considered an asset.
Registered or eligible for registration as an Engineer‑in‑Training (EIT) in British Columbia, with the ability to obtain professional registration in upcoming years.
Knowledge and experience implementing design solutions on construction sites.
Experience with stability analyses/assessments, rock support design/verification for structures in soft/hard rock.
Proficient with geotechnical software (Rocscience packages such as Dips, RS2, Unwedge, RS3); knowledge of Leapfrog/Seequent, CAD and Deswik is advantageous.
Effective communication, interpersonal and teamwork skills; capable of collaborating with all levels of staff and clients and nurturing the development of junior staff.
Enthusiasm for supervising others and checking/approving key deliverables.
Salary and Perks Expected salary range: $84,000 – $103,000.
