Description
Location: Vancouver, BC (Vancouver Shipyards) Position Type: Full-Time, Project-Based Compensation: Competitive (Based on experience) Matrix HR is seeking highly skilled and execution-focused Commissioning Engineers to drive the critical testing, trials, and final acceptance phases of major shipbuilding programs in Vancouver, BC. You will be directly involved in bringing complex, multi-role vessels to life under the National Shipbuilding Strategy (NSS). This includes the Joint Support Ships (JSS) for the Royal Canadian Navy and the Offshore Oceanographic Science Vessel (OOSV) for the Canadian Coast Guard. This is an operational role for hands‑on, field‑ready professionals who thrive in the troubleshooting and integration phases. We are looking for individuals who can aggressively drive systems toward successful vessel delivery. Scope of Work Power generation and complex electrical distribution networks. Diesel-electric propulsion and auxiliary systems. Advanced automation, power management, and control systems. HVAC, fire detection, and suppression systems. Navigation, communication, and specialized scientific or sensor suites. Role Responsibilities Executing shipboard commissioning and testing activities for complex marine systems on new build vessels. Leading system walkdowns, inspections, and verification as part of the handover process from construction to commissioning. Conducting functional, performance, and safety testing of ship propulsion systems, auxiliary equipment, power generation, and electrical systems. Managing the integration of complex systems across mechanical, electrical, and automation disciplines. Identifying, recording, and resolving defects or deficiencies during the testing phase and driving them to closure. Ensuring the safe operation of all ship systems from initial energization through to final acceptance. Participating in sea trials to support final commissioning and testing activities. Collaborating closely with trades, vendors, and cross-functional teams to maintain the project schedule. Requirements Bachelor's degree in Marine, Mechanical, or Electrical Engineering, or a combination of relevant education and extensive field experience. 5 to 10+ years of dedicated experience in commissioning, testing, or system startup. Robust background in shipbuilding, marine environments, or heavy industrial sectors such as Oil and Gas or Power Generation. An execution-phase mindset with exceptional analytical and troubleshooting skills. Familiarity with the safe operation and functional aspects of large-scale industrial or shipboard systems. Ability to support multiple concurrent activities while meeting aggressive schedule, safety, and quality expectations. A Marine Engineering Certificate of Competency is considered a strong asset. Must be eligible to obtain Controlled Goods Program (CGP) and Reliability Status clearances.
