Description
The Controller will lead the organization’s financial operations with a focus on accuracy, compliance and thoughtful stewardship of resources. This role requires solid leadership capabilities, sound judgment and the ability to oversee financial reporting obligations, including reporting to government agencies. The ideal candidate brings experience in month‑end close processes, budgeting, and managing financial systems within a non‑profit or similarly complex environment. This role is on site in Kitchener- Waterloo. Key Responsibilities Financial Leadership and Oversight - Provide strategic financial leadership to support organizational objectives. - Lead, mentor and support a small finance team to ensure accuracy, accountability and ongoing development. - Partner with senior leadership to provide insights, guidance and recommendations that strengthen financial decision making. Financial Reporting and Compliance - Prepare timely and accurate financial statements in accordance with accounting standards for non‑profit organizations. - Oversee financial reporting to government bodies and funding agencies, ensuring compliance with all regulatory requirements. - Coordinate external audits and liaise with auditors as needed. Budgeting and Forecasting - Lead the annual budgeting process, working closely with internal stakeholders to develop realistic and mission‑aligned budgets. - Monitor financial performance and prepare rolling forecasts, variance analyses and financial dashboards. Operational Accounting - Oversee all aspects of month‑end and year‑end close processes. - Ensure effective financial controls, policies and procedures that support transparency and operational excellence. - Manage cash flow, banking, payroll oversight and general ledger integrity. Systems and Process Improvement - Evaluate and enhance financial processes to improve efficiency and accuracy. - Support the adoption and optimization of financial systems, tools and reporting frameworks. Qualifications - CPA designation strongly preferred. - CA firm experience nice-to-have - Minimum 5 years of leadership experience in accounting, with working knowledge of cost accounting. - Proven experience in budgeting, forecasting and month‑end close. - Demonstrated leadership ability with strength in communication, collaboration and problem solving. - Comfort working in a hybrid environment with a high level of autonomy and accountability. - Proficiency with accounting software and financial reporting tools.
