Executive Director

The Executive Director provides overall leadership and operational oversight for a community-focused service organization. This role reports into the Board of Directors and is responsible for guiding strategic priorities, ensuring sustainable operations, and fostering strong relationships with stakeholders including funders, community partners, employees, volunteers, and the public.

Working in collaboration with the Board, the Executive Director ensures that programs and services are delivered effectively, regulatory obligations are met, and organizational values are reflected in all activities.

Key Responsibilities

Organizational Leadership and Strategy

• Translate the organization's long-term direction into actionable operational plans and measurable outcomes.

• Lead organizational change initiatives, policy development, and continuous improvement efforts.

• Provide oversight of major initiatives, partnerships, and service delivery frameworks to ensure alignment with strategic priorities.

• Monitor environmental, legislative, and sector trends to proactively identify risks and opportunities.

• Represent the organization within community forums, sector committees, and collaborative networks.

• Support initiatives that promote participation, inclusion, and community engagement.

Operational Oversight

• Direct day-to-day organizational functions including program delivery, administration, facilities, and support services through a leadership team.

• Ensure effective risk management practices and compliance with applicable regulations, accreditation standards, and governance requirements.

• Establish and maintain systems that support quality assurance, performance tracking, and organizational accountability.

• Maintain clear communication channels between senior leadership and the Board regarding emerging issues or operational updates.

People and Culture

• Provide leadership in workforce planning, talent development, and organizational culture.

• Oversee recruitment, onboarding, coaching, performance management, and succession planning for leadership staff.

• Ensure alignment with employment legislation, organizational policies, and collective agreements where applicable.

• Support leadership teams in scheduling, workforce deployment, and employee engagement initiatives.

Governance, Finance, and Administration

• Collaborate with the Board on annual planning, budgeting, and performance monitoring.

• Oversee financial stewardship including budget management, resource allocation, and investment awareness.

• Lead negotiations related to service agreements, funding arrangements, and strategic partnerships.

• Prepare for and participate in Board and committee meetings, providing timely reporting and recommendations.

• Support Board effectiveness including director recruitment and governance best practices.

• Act as a key organizational spokesperson on administrative and operational matters.

Qualifications and Experience

• Post-secondary education in a relevant field such as human services, public administration, nonprofit management, or a related discipline.

• Demonstrated leadership experience within community-based or service-oriented environments.

• Experience managing teams, budgets, and complex operational functions.

• Strong administrative capability including reporting, data management, and use of technology systems.

• Understanding of regulatory frameworks, stakeholder relations, and program accountability.

• Equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered.
