Number of Available positions Vacancies: two (2) 1 Regular Full-Time position 1 Temporary Full-Time position Communications Specialist Reporting to the Communications Officer, the incumbent will be responsible for various communications activities that help enhance the positive image of the Region, while increasing internal and external awareness of various programs, services, and initiatives. The incumbent will - Identify and independently draft communications plans and key communications materials (including brochures, newsletters, articles, web postings, key messaging, media materials, social media posts, etc.). Includes exercising independence to establish key messaging, strategic goals, tactical approaches, and measurable outcomes. - Provide communications guidance to departmental/program staff on various activities and/or issues, including effective communications methods and preferred design elements. - Compile, monitor, track and evaluate communications activities, including providing budget recommendations for use of advertising dollars. - Provide after-hours standby services and duties, when required. - Provide social media and digital content oversight and review. - Undertake emergency information duties during unexpected situations, declared emergencies and/or related exercises. The successful applicant will possess: - A post-secondary diploma or degree in Public Relations, Communications, Journalism, or a related discipline or equivalent combination of education and experience - Several years' experience in the communications field - Excellent command of the English language, including solid grammar, writing, and editing skills with a keen attention to detail - Creative and proficient strategic and analytical thinking, problem-solving and excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both verbal and written - Capacity to foster mutual understanding in intercultural and interdepartmental interactions - Time-management, organizational and decision-making skills are all necessary, as well as the ability to multitask to meet tight deadlines, while working both collaboratively and independently - Knowledge of applicable legislation, including Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act, Municipal Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act, Durham Region Strategic Plan, and Canadian Press Style - Proven proficiency with various computer software applications including Microsoft Office and web technologies. Experience with emergency management system and graphic arts software (Microsoft 365, Canva, i:Create, InDesign, Photoshop, Adobe Acrobat, Adobe Creative Suite) - Extensive knowledge of social media platforms and tools including Facebook, X/Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram, YouTube and Sprout Social - A valid Ontario Class G Driver's Licence and access to a vehicle CUPE 1764 Salary Grade 6 This position is with Salary Grade 6 and will be paid at the following hourly rates: - Start: $45.00 - Six Month: $47.50 - Job: $50.00 Conditions of Employment All applicants are expected to comply with the Region of Durham's Code of Ethics and Code of Conduct Policies throughout the recruitment process.
