The Construction Manager will be responsible for all construction related activities on the project, starting with the development of construction contract strategies and developing the formal contract scope documents which supports the bidding process. Once awarded and the contracts are mobilized to site the Construction Manager, supported by the onsite Construction Management team, will take accountability for the performance of all contractors on site activities including adherence to safety, cost, quality and schedule targets.
The role will be a clear advocate to communicate and uphold our Gold Mining Client's Safety culture and values. As Site Owner they will have accountability for the safety performance of all site activities and will ensure the entire Safety, Health and Emergency Response protocols are prepared and upheld during the construction phases.
Leading through construction, commissioning and handover phases, the Construction Manager will work collaboratively to prepare the sites newly constructed assets for transfer our Client's operations team in an orderly and planned manner.
Primary Responsibilities
- To be Client's Senior Leader on the site owning safety, contractor performance and schedule adherence.
- Manages an on site multi-disciplinary team inc Safety, Project Controls, Procurement and Contracts.
- Be an outstanding Safety leader, demonstrating mature and focused safe work practices
- Develop entire project construction contract strategies utilizing AWP/CWP methodologies
- Lead preparation and review of all construction contract scopes of work and construction proposals.
- Ensure constructability of project facilities, including laydown planning.
- Develop crane placement strategies for efficient build progress
- Ensure construction schedules are developed and achieved to meet overall project completion goals.
- Review all project-related studies, reports, and engineering documentation.
- Direct site early works and construction activities.
- Provide support and advice for engineering, procurement, and construction activities.
- Assist with contractor and vendor management, including effective change management for construction contracts.
- Liaise with project commercial and cost control functions to ensure project reporting calendars are maintained.
- Assist with selection and onboarding of Owner's construction team members.
- Coordinate meetings, site activities, and resources including consultants, contractors and employees as required to meet targets.
- Ensure corporate and site Health, Safety and Environmental policies and procedures are followed.
- Help ensure project is fit for purpose and delivered on time and on budget.
Skills, Knowledge, Qualifications and Experience:
- Minimum experience of 20 years in large mega mining/industrial projects during the design, construction and commissioning phases, ideally based in an EPCM or owner self-perform organization.
- Has experience in being designated as a construction site "Prime Contractor" as defined in Manitoba's The Workplace Safety and Health Act 2022 – or equivalent for other Provinces.
- Experience in managing a team of on-site construction management professionals and construction contractors with values of >$500M.;
- Minimum experience of 10 years in a supervisory role.
- Has a strong personal and demonstratable safety culture.
- Understand construction quality, cost control, progress and reporting principles.
- Has experience in project completion and handover to operation phases of a large mining/industrial project.
- Comfortable with developing construction strategies for the entire project sequence
- Experience in negotiating construction contract terms and conditions
- Ability to define construction Scope of Work (SOW);
- Understands construction AWP/CWP methodologies.
- Ability to demonstrate sophisticated negotiating skills and strong leadership;
- Able to be flexible, decisive and use superb judgment in decision making;
- Effective ability to convey messages in an organized, clear and succinct way;
- The individual should have a high level of energy, self-motivation and strong organizational skills;
- Excellent interpersonal ability together with an ability to facilitate commitment to a coordinated team effort;
- Outstanding written and verbal communication with both internal and external contacts and the ability to work with all levels of the organization.
