Job Summary The Water Distribution and Wastewater Collection Operator will be responsible for support of the operations of water distribution and wastewater collection systems to meet Provincial legislated requirements and Regional program needs. Duties & Responsibilities Perform maintenance, repairs, replacements, and installations of water and wastewater systems including valves, sewer laterals, fire hydrants, maintenance holes, wastewater mains, water mains, meters, water main taps and related equipment. Respond to customer inquiries, complaints and concerns in a timely and professional manner. Complete service turn‑on and turn‑off for customers, permits and projects. Perform water distribution system investigations to identify and repair leaks. Perform basic pipe fitting. Conduct underground infrastructure analysis and locate underground assets. Carry out fire flow tests on hydrants. Perform sewer lateral and wastewater main back‑up clearing and cleaning. Perform daily water quality sample tests for secondary disinfection control, strictly adhering to sampling requirements and protected handling of materials associated with the water industry. Assist with compiling information for work orders and reports to supervisors, management and the MECP. Operate trucks and heavy equipment when required, including Vactor trucks for flushing and digging. Support other functions within the Public Works department as needed. Perform other duties as assigned. Essential Skills & Qualifications Secondary school diploma and upon hire possess an Operator‑in‑Training certification/license. Possession of a valid class G Ontario driver’s licence. Knowledge of related acts and regulations (e.g., Occupational Health and Safety Act, Safe Drinking Water Act, Ontario Water Resources Act, Environmental Protection Act). Demonstrated mechanical aptitude, manual dexterity, and computer aptitude. Solid customer service skills. Proven ability as an effective team member, committed to cooperation, flexibility with co‑workers, management, internal groups and the public. Demonstration of results orientation, initiative, continuous learning, dependability, adaptability, leadership, integrity, respect, problem solving and decision making. Preferred Qualifications Post‑secondary education and/or experience in a related civil, environmental or mechanical field. Upon interview, possess an Operator‑in‑Training (OIT) level licence or higher. Experience and thorough knowledge of water distribution and wastewater collection systems operation and components including pipes and outlying stations. Familiarity with GIS, CMMS systems and ability to read technical drawings. Possession of a valid class DZ Ontario driver’s licence. Working Conditions Must possess and maintain a valid Class DZ Ontario driver’s licence beyond the probationary period. Regular hours of work, serving on standby and responding to after‑hour callouts. Perform duties in inclement weather and work within roadways. Occasionally work in confined spaces, as specified by Public Works operations practices. Carry out physically demanding activities, including lifting, carrying, reaching, pushing, pulling, gripping, sitting, standing, walking, climbing, stooping, torso twisting, crouching, kneeling and ladder climbing. Wastewater activities may involve working in unsanitary or odorous conditions at times. Employment Conditions The successful candidate will be required to provide an Operator‑in‑Training certification/license or higher prior to their employment start date. Maintain Ministry of Environment, Conservation and Parks (MECP) operator certification and licensing for Water Distribution and Wastewater Collection systems. Maintain Ministry of Transportation Ontario (MTO) class G and DZ licences. Provide a current, original and acceptable Criminal Records Check, obtained within the past six months, by the first day of employment. Drive a Regional vehicle and provide a copy of their licence and driver abstract by the first day of employment.
