Senior Structural Engineer (Edmonton)

Savick is a manufacturer of chopped straw insulated wood frame panels based near Edmonton, AB and operating throughout Canada. Since 2021, this family owned business has steadily increased its capability and capacity to provide robust bio-based construction solutions for a wide variety of projects. Savick is built around shortening the distance between the farmers field and the finished building - which are designed to stand for centuries. Position We are seeking an experienced structural engineer to join our design team. A successful applicant will lead Savick’s transition away from its current reliance on 3rd party engineering providers to becoming a licensed qualified structural and envelope engineering firm. The role will involve continued work in bio-based insulation research and development - working alongside some of Canada’s finest polytechnics, universities, private laboratories, government agencies, and regulators. The structural and envelope engineering position will also involve project specific design responsibilities. Many of Savick’s upcoming large scale projects will involve delegated design responsibilities from the projects Engineer of Record (EOR), which are independent firms retained directly by Savick’s customers. This work will involve the specific modelling and design of straw panels, engineered floor systems, and additional wood based components such timberframe, glulam, CLT, and associated connections. This will also involve the development of shop drawings, installation plans, and detailed construction drawings in collaboration with Savick’s drafting team. On smaller scale (often single family residences) projects, the successful applicant will often act as the project's EOR. This includes the review of customer supplied documentation (such as architectural plans, energy models, and geo-technical reports) to develop strategies for both the project's substructure and superstructure. In addition to supporting Savick’s drafting team in the development of internal design documents, responsibilities will include the issuance of professional schedules, development of project specifications, and responding to contractor RFI’s and inspections during the construction phase. Requirements A Bachelor's or Master’s degree in Civil or Structural Engineering (or a related Engineering Degree) At least 10 years of experience working as structural engineer, with a minimum of 5 years experience in timber engineering. Licensed P.Eng. in Alberta, additional provinces an asset A strong understanding of the National Building Code (NBC) and CSA O86 Engineering Design in Wood Minimum of 5 years experience working with 3D modelling software Strong understanding of engineering fundamentals, problem solving, and first principles thinking Excellent written and verbal communication skills Has a strong respect for people and has a demonstrated track record of continuous improvement Assets Experience working with bio-based materials such as straw, hemp, or cellulose insulation Experience working specifically with Revit, AGACAD, and iStruct Experience working with panelized wood frame construction Hand-ons skill and experience working with light wood frame and mass timber both off-site and on-site Compensation Hourly ($55-$80 per hour) or salary ($110,000 - $170,000 CAD) based options available The position may be casual, part-time (20 hours per week), or full-time depending on the best fit between the company and the successful candidate.
