Claroscuro Architecture Inc. is seeking a Senior or Intermediate Architectural Technologist to support multi-family residential and select commercial projects through the building permit, tender, construction, and closeout stages. This position is best suited to a technically strong technologist with experience preparing permit and construction documents, coordinating consultants, developing construction details, and supporting contract administration during active construction. Position Overview This role combines technical documentation, consultant coordination, permit support, and construction-phase administration within an architectural practice. The successful candidate will contribute to clear and coordinated drawing packages, support the production of permit and tender documents, and assist with field review, submittal review, change documentation, and communication with contractors, consultants, clients, and authorities having jurisdiction. Key Responsibilities The successful candidate will: · Prepare, develop, and coordinate architectural working drawings, construction details, and technical documentation for multi-family residential and commercial projects during design development, building permit, and tender phases. · Assist in the production and coordination of construction details and technical documentation for the building permit phase of projects, with attention to clarity, constructability, and compliance with applicable codes and standards. · Coordinate architectural documents with consultant drawings and internal project requirements to produce accurate, complete, and well-organized construction packages. · Review and comment on contract documents, specifications, shop drawings, product data, samples, and other submittals to support technical quality and alignment with design intent. · Conduct regular site visits and field reviews, prepare site reports, and identify deficiencies or discrepancies between the work in place and the contract documents. · Prepare and coordinate contract administration documentation, including RFIs, supplemental instructions, contemplated change notices, change orders, certificates for payment, and closeout records. · Liaise with contractors, consultants, project teams, and municipal officials to resolve technical and construction-related issues in a timely and professional manner. · Participate in consultant meetings, site meetings, coordination meetings, deficiency reviews, and project closeout activities as required. · Support projects that are primarily wood-frame, with occasional concrete and steel structures, including mid-rise, mixed-use, and similar residential building types, with attention to envelope detailing, constructability, and code coordination. · Contribute to office quality control, documentation standards, and mentorship of junior staff where appropriate. Qualifications Intermediate Level · 4 or more years of experience in an architectural office or related practice, with relevant experience in technical documentation, permit drawings, and construction administration support. · Diploma in Architectural Technology or an equivalent combination of technical education and relevant experience. · Experience producing working drawings, drawing details, permit packages, and construction documents in a Revit-based environment, with some documents prepared in CAD. Senior Level · 7 or more years of experience in architectural technology, including significant involvement in construction documentation and contract administration on multi-family or comparable building projects. · Demonstrated ability to coordinate documentation, lead technical review processes, and support project teams through permit, tender, and construction stages. Preferred Skills and Credentials · Strong technical knowledge of building assemblies, building science, construction methods, and code coordination relevant to Alberta projects. · Experience in multi-family residential projects, including wood-frame and mid-rise construction. · Proficiency in Revit and Microsoft Office, with strong document coordination and drawing review skills. · Familiarity with contract administration procedures, including field review, submittal review, change documentation, and payment certification. · Valid Alberta driver’s license and ability to travel to project sites in Edmonton and surrounding areas as required. Candidate Profile The ideal candidate is a technically strong Architectural Technologist who is comfortable moving between drawing production, consultant coordination, permit documentation, and active construction-phase support. This role requires attention to detail, a practical understanding of how buildings are assembled, and the ability to communicate clearly with both internal teams and external stakeholders. Studio Environment and Culture Office Location and Work Environment · ​Located in historic Beaver House, one block south of the Ice District and one block east of 104 Street. · Quiet, comfortable studio environment with access to a large amenity space on the lower floor, including a full kitchen and living room. · Close to numerous lunch and coffee options, with access to bike storage. · One block from LRT stations connecting with all three Edmonton LRT lines. · Travel to project sites is required, mainly within Edmonton and the surrounding area. Industry Involvement · ​Support for employee involvement in industry organizations and events. · Encouragement to participate in volunteer activities that help build a professional network. Recruitment Process The selection process typically consists of two interviews. · ​ First interview, preferably in person unless the candidate is from out of town, focused on background, experience, and overall fit with the studio culture. · Second interview, held in person at the office, which may include technical questions related to software proficiency and architectural detailing. Compensation and Benefits Compensation · ​ Compensation will be determined based on the successful candidate’s experience, skills, and capacity to take on responsibilities within the firm. Benefits · ​Health, dental, and extended healthcare benefits available following successful completion of a three‑month probationary period. · The monthly benefits premium is shared, with 50 percent of the cost covered by the employer. Time Off and Flexibility · ​ 2 weeks of paid vacation annually, plus office closure over the Christmas period, with specific dates confirmed each year. · Versatile work hours within the week, allowing time for personal matters provided hours are made up within the same week and coordinated with the team. · Time worked beyond regular hours may be taken as time off in lieu, subject to prior approval. · Sick days are available on an as-needed unpaid basis. Work Location · ​Standard expectation is in‑office work. Transportation and Expenses · ​Transportation allowance of $250 every three months.
