Job Summary

Hosted at Dalhousie University, the new Centre of Excellence in Fisheries Science will enhance Canadian fisheries management through integrated research, innovation, and collaborative knowledge mobilization. The Centre will develop and deploy next‑generation assessment tools that enable decision‑making to account for the challenges facing our marine ecosystems, while building the capacity required to sustainably manage Canada’s marine resources for future generations and trains future fisheries scientists. The Research Scientist will develop stock assessment models to incorporate environmental factors and be responsive to climate‑driven changes in fish populations. They will also support fisheries science and management efforts at provincial, regional, and national levels. The Centre is intended to bridge gaps and foster collaboration between all groups with an interest in the fisheries including federal agencies, industry partners, provincial regulators, Indigenous organizations, and non‑governmental organizations. Reporting to the Centre co‑directors, the Research Scientist is expected to be an important part of this goal and will have strong collaboration skills and a willingness to work in a interdisciplinary setting.Key Responsibilities

Develop and implement statistical models for fisheries stock assessment and related analyses. Present and communicate results of analyses to industry, government, indigenous, and academic partners. Build and maintain these collaborative relationships. Identify emerging research opportunities and develop innovative methodological frameworks.Supervise and mentor postdoctoral fellows, graduate students, research assistants, and technical staff. Note

The successful applicant will be eligible for hybrid work (combination of in‑person work on campus and remote work from within Nova Scotia) as agreed by all parties based on operational requirements and university guidelines. Required Qualifications

PhD in statistics, mathematics, fisheries science, or other related field, with six years of research experience (or an equivalent combination of training and experience). Demonstrated expertise in R, including the use of TMB (Template Model Builder)/RTMB. Demonstrated ability to collaborate with academic and non‑academic partners.Experience with the following: spatio‑temporal statistics, Bayesian hierarchical modelling, fisheries stock assessment modelling, fisheries dependent and fisheries independent data, oceanographic and other environmental data. Experience training students and/or professionals in the use of stock assessment models and associated tools.Assets

Demonstrated ability to prepare and publish peer‑reviewed scientific publications and technical reports. Job Competencies
