Senior Mechanical Engineering Manager Location: Edmonton Area Company: Silent-Aire, a Johnson Controls Company Time Type: Full-time permanent Position Overview Silent-Aire, part of Johnson Controls, is a global leader in innovative solutions for data center customers. We design and deliver large-scale custom equipment such as Air Handling Units (AHUs), Modular Data Centers (MDCs), and Coolant Distribution Units (CDUs) to meet demanding hyperscale and mission-critical requirements. The Senior Mechanical Engineering Manager provides technical leadership and people management across complex mechanical engineering programs, aligning engineering execution, customer needs, manufacturing constraints, and business objectives. Key Responsibilities Leadership and Development Lead, mentor, and grow a mechanical engineering organization (≈6 direct, 25 indirect reports). Foster a culture of technical excellence, accountability, and continuous learning. Set technical expectations, priorities, and workload plans for concurrent projects. Support hiring, onboarding, performance management, career development, and succession planning. Technical Leadership: Maintain accountability for mechanical system designs (AHUs, MDCs, CDUs, custom data center solutions). Escalation authority for complex technical issues, design risk, and system performance. Ensure compliance with codes, standards, customer specifications, and certification requirements. Provide design guidance, code reviews, equipment testing, and construction documentation. Project Execution: Serve as technical project manager and prime coordinator for assigned programs. Plan, execute strategy, and manage engineering risks. Coordinate across electrical, structural, controls, manufacturing, quality, supply chain, and program management teams. Support estimating, proposal development, pricing alignment, pre-award technical reviews, testing, commissioning, and warranty resolution. Product Optimization: Lead and support testing activities to validate HVAC design solutions and equipment performance. Champion standardization while allowing flexibility for custom requirements. Drive improvements in engineering processes, workflows, and documentation, and promote innovation, value engineering, and best practices. Documentation and Governance: Ensure accurate, complete, timely engineering documentation (drawings, design reviews, submittals, reports, change requests). Support disciplined execution of engineering change processes (ECR, ECN, TCN, FCN). Develop and maintain SOPs for design processes and VAVE initiatives, promoting consistent engineering practices. Collaboration: Work closely with manufacturing, quality, and supply-chain teams to identify cost reduction, performance improvement, and manufacturability opportunities. Maintain ongoing compliance with local, national, and international standards and regulations. Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering (BSc. Eng., B.Eng.) Professional Engineering (P.Eng.) designation Minimum 10 years mechanical engineering experience Experience supporting hyperscale data center customers or mission-critical facilities Proven leadership and development of engineering teams Practical experience with risk management, product design and testing, estimating, and project management Ability to integrate new technologies and collaborate across multiple disciplines Solid background in custom equipment design, HVAC systems, and complex project execution Proven ability to balance technical depth with people leadership Strong work ethic and positive team attitude Preferred Qualifications Experience as an APEGA Responsible Member Understanding of Electrical, Structural, and Controls engineering Proficiency with AutoCAD, Creo, Revit, and ANSYS Minimum 4 years HVAC design experience Minimum 8 years project management or coordination Knowledge of manufacturing processes and materials Familiarity with industry standards and regulations related to data center equipment Strong understanding of manufacturing processes, testing, and quality systems Salary & Benefits Hiring salary range: $123,000-$186,000 CAD. This position includes a competitive benefits package. The posted salary range reflects the target compensation for this role, though exceptional candidates may bring skills and experiences that exceed the typical profile.
