Position Overview
The Senior Policy Advisor will play a key role in shaping and influencing public policy and will work closely with senior leadership, government agencies, external stakeholders, and cross-functional teams to provide advice on policy issues. This role requires excellent writing skills combined with an understanding of the legislative processes, policy analysis, and the ability to navigate complex political and organizational landscapes.
Key Responsibilities: Policy Analysis & Development:
- Conduct in-depth research and analysis on policy issues affecting CIJA.
- Prepare policy briefs, position papers, and other documents to inform internal and external stakeholders.
- Working with the VP Policy and Issues Management, develop new policy initiatives and contribute to the review and modification of existing policies.
- Analyze proposed legislation, regulatory changes, and political developments to assess potential impact on the organization.
- Provide senior leadership with actionable advice and strategic guidance on policy-related matters.
- Work closely with leadership teams to align policy goals with organizational objectives and priorities.
- Serve as an internal resource on policy issues for staff and other departments.
Stakeholder Engagement & Advocacy:
- Build and maintain relationships with key stakeholders, including government officials, legislators, industry leaders, and advocacy groups.
- Represent the organization in meetings with policymakers, agencies, and other external entities.
- Prepare and present testimony and other materials for legislative hearings and public forums.
Communication & Reporting:
- Draft speeches, talking points, and communication materials for senior leaders to use in interactions with government officials, media, and other stakeholders.
- Prepare regular reports and updates for leadership on key policy developments and organizational positions.
- Collaborate with the communications team to ensure consistent messaging on policy issues.
Qualifications:Skills:
- Strong analytical skills with the ability to synthesize complex information and present it in a clear and concise manner.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders.
- Expertise in navigating political landscapes and understanding of public policy development processes.
- Strategic thinker with the ability to anticipate challenges and proactively develop solutions.
- Confidence in expressing opinions and ability to influence others.
- Patient and emotionally intelligent team-player with excellent interpersonal skills who places a focus on fostering a collaborative corporate culture.
- Bilingualism an asset.
Education:
- Bachelor's degree in public policy, Political Science, Law, Economics, or a related field.
- Master's degree – nice to have.
Additional Requirements:
- Experience in policy analysis, and government relations and government affairs
- High level of professionalism, confidentiality, and integrity.
- Ability to work independently and take initiative in a challenging environment.
Working Conditions:
- Located in either our Toronto, Ottawa (preferred), or Montreal offices.
- This position may require occasional travel for meetings, conferences, and events.
- Flexibility in work hours, with some evenings or weekends required depending on the legislative calendar and policy deadlines.
- Hybrid work environment (optional/depending on company policy).
